Yes, you can use xbmc on Raspbian. I think it's even in the apt repository, although I'm not sure how recent it is. You can also follow the instructions here: http://elinux.org/RPi_XBMC to get a more recent, pre-compiled version.

For TV, in the uk there is http://plugins.tvcatchup.com/~xbmc/ although I don't know how well it works as I haven't tried it.

Yes, it's the 3rd party repository that you need. The owner of http://michael.gorven.za.net/raspberrypi/xbmc keeps a relatively up to date version of XBMC in his own repo, so just follow the steps in that section of the wiki page, i.e.

Code: Select all

sudo echo "deb http://archive.mene.za.net/raspbian wheezy contrib" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mene.list
   sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-key 5243CDED
   sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get install xbmc
If the first command fails with a permission error, then use:

Code: Select all

  sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mene.list
and type in deb http://archive.mene.za.net/raspbian wheezy contrib (then CTRL-X, Y, <Return> to save and exit) and then carry out the other steps.

Install XBMCHub and add all of the third party repositories. Once you do you will be able to find a ton of video add-ons for streaming moves, live tv, and tv shows.

Though I'd recommend the combination of OpenElec and XBMC.
