Music player with dynamic range compression

A friend of mine's been looking for a cheap set-and-forget way to play background music at his spa; I was thinking a Pi would be perfect for this.

The main issue is he tends to play classical music, with the incumbent wide dynamic range, resulting in hugely variable levels. I read on the XBMC forums that it apparently has some kind of DRC built in, but the consensus appears to be that it's not particularly refined yet (at least for the Pi), although they're working on it.

I was wondering if this is the best bet, or if someone might have an alternate suggestion. I'm not concerned with extra bells and whistles, just being able to play audio files without the levels being all over the place.

Extra bonus appreciation if there's some way of having it automatically start playing as soon as the Pi has booted.

Cheers
