PI does not recognize external hard drive

Fri Mar 22, 2013 9:31 am

Hello people,

I would like to use my raspberry pi as a media center with XBMC. The Problem is: The Pi does not recognize my external hard drive. There are no problems with an USB - STick
Specifications of the hard drive: USB 3.0 HDD Intenso Memory Center, 2 TB
Did anyone have similar problems?

Greetings

DonPI

Does the hard drive have it's own power supply or is it powered through the USB cable?

If it is powered through the USB cable, try connecting it to your Pi through a powered USB hub - the Pi may not be able to supply sufficient power to the hard drive.

When you say that the Pi does not recognise the hard drive, is it registering anything at all.

For example, do you see any entries in /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog when you plug in the drive?
If you type 'lsusb' does it list the hard drive as a device?

As the previous poster mentioned, it does sound like a power issue (is the hard drive even spinning up when you connect it directly to the Pi USB port?)
