Suggestions for android apps to control Pi 4 as an audio player

Mon Jul 27, 2020 4:13 pm

Hello,

Instead of googling (although I have done this too!) I thought I'd ask some fellow Pi enthusiasts. Hope you can help....

Can anyone suggest a reliable android app that will get my Raspberry Pi 4 to play mp3 files when asked?

I know it sounds simple but I've tried various combinations of kodi, libreelec, rune and while they work very well with a keyboard mouse and monitor (not rune) as soon as you start trying the simplest command like playing an mp3 with a browser they struggle.

I've tried the kore, kodi, yatse, and rune apps and all are pretty bad in some way or other.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Not without knowing what you're using for playback on the 4B, no.

If it helps. I've used the following combinations:
  • Pi side: mpd on raspbian lite
    Android side: MPDroid
  • Pi side: forked-daapd on raspbian lite
    Android side: MPDroid
  • Pi side: shairport-sync on raspbian lite
Android side: anything that can stream to an airplay receiver. (Not limited to android devices)

piCorePlayer and Logitech Media Server on the RPi. A browser or Squeezer app on the Android.

Or Volumio on the Pi, and either its web interface on a browser or their (paid) remote control app on the Android.

I think you can also use MPDDroid and suchlike as well on the remote side, as Volumio is based on MPD.

Thanks for all the suggestions. So far have tried Volumio and it's very very easy. Install and go!
