Hi,
Does anyone power their Raspberry Pi XBMC through the TV's in built USB or through a micro USB main adaptor ?

Your Pi needs about 700mA to operate; to quote the Raspberry Pi user guide:
Connecting the Pi to the USB port on a desktop or laptop computer is possible, but not recommended. As with smaller chargers, the USB ports on a computer can't provide the power required for the Pi to work properly
The "smaller chargers" bit refers to the fact that many small smartphone micro-USB chargers can only supply 500mA, so the bottom line is that it depends on the mA available from the USB port on the TV.
I use a 700mA plug-in adapter, but you can use the output from a powered USB hub too, if it has sufficient power.

LG 42LM3450 is happily powering my Raspberry Pi - now if only the Pi had a battery built-in that gracefully shut down when I turn off my TV, my life would be much better! :)

Hello,

I have powered my pi from my lg tv usb port without issue. I have also used the usb sockets on my pc, thse supply power even when the pc is shutdown. And most recently have been powering from my router which has usb sockets on.

I like using the router as it is always on, and adding an extra 3 watts doesnt upet me too much.

Writing this has made me ponder the fact that my router is on all the time, even when no one is using the damn thing! Balls.

I power my 512/B/r2 from my Tivo, seeing as the Tivo is on 24/7.

If it was going to be unstable plan B was the Wii, but the Wii is noisy at idle.

I have a http://www.nwazet.com/nwazet-pi-xbmc-ra ... t-included so at 9v it isn't really an option. I haven't looked at My TV's USB as a supply guess I would like to know what amp it's output is rated for but suppose it is always an option.

Hi Folks,

Does anyone who is powering from TV also power external USB or wifi dongle at the same time or is that just too much juice?

Would be cool to power the Pi, wifi and an external hard drive all from my TV!

Cheers,

I just upgraded to usb wifi, and the TV no longer provides enough juice. :(

I went out and got a 2A PSU for the Pi and everything is working great again - so I effectively swapped one cable for another, albeit a cable (power) that I can plug in just about anywhere versus a cable (network) which needs to be near my NAS/router.

Tried powering the Pi from a Panasonic TX-L24X5B. This appeared to work, but the television started behaving very strangely. HD channels reported no signal and stopped working and the menu screens flickered every few seconds.
