DVB-T2 tuner for (older) TV and media player (Kodi)

Mon Apr 27, 2020 10:39 am

Hi,

I was wondering if it's possible to build DVB-T2 tuner (Raspberry Pi TV HAT) that has TV for output (instead of PC monitor) - plugged by HDMI and can receive control signals from TV remote - or include IR receiver that can interpret signals from TV remote?

edit:
it should be for older TVs that has DVB-T tuner or T2 without hevc

also, this project can be extended to complete media centre box with youtube, etc

Kodi.
Kodi can be a tv channel backend and frontend eg. With Tvheadend server and client addons. You can navigate the tv guide, record, pause with tv remote if your tv is hdmi-cec enabled.

Could you please provide me source where can I begin? This would be my first Raspberry PI project.

or write down step by step, or at least crucial steps with links

thank you very much!

I'd like to try this on Pi4, - which model should I choose: 1, 2, or 4GB RAM ?
what do you think - would it stream/play 1080p (or even 4k) video smoothly?

TV programs will be broadcasted in 1080p (hevc)

edit:
how to play sound on AV receiver that is already connected to TV?

if that Pi is plugged in hdmi port on AV receiver, how to control it with remote?

You can't buy a RPi4B1GB (they've been discontinued when the 2GB model got a price drop).

Buy a RPi4B2GB and you'll be cooking on gas.

I just saw a 1GB model at local reseller...
approx 10$ difference to a 2GB

Basically, i need:
RPi4 (2/4GB)
power supply
memory card (32gb samsung evo plus?)
tv hat
micro hdmi > hdmi (2.0)
and some suitable case...

what would be ok deal (in $) for this parts?

at my local reseller it would cost around $160 (for 4GB) and $140 for 2GB model

my only concern is - would tv hat work on Pi4 ?

All of the RPF/RPT HATs and uHATs are 100% guaranteed to work on RPi4.

The folks still selling RPi4B 1GB are dumping old stock.

That's a meaninless number because I don't know if that's Singapore, Hong Kong, Australian, New Zeland, Canadian dollars.

Head over here: ucp.php?i=173 and fill in your location (it doesn't need to be exact like mine) - it makes answering your questions easier.
