From 'Openelec' to 'Raspbian + Kodi' ?

Sat Nov 03, 2018 10:48 pm

My actual situation:
I have 3 raspberry pis running on Openelec (Kodi 17)
1 raspi in my living room
1 raspi in my sleeping room
1 raspi in my cellar bar.
The living room raspi is equipped with 2 USB-HDs, each 2 TB. My videos and music files are stored on these HDs.
The 2 other raspis ('slaves') are connected by 'smb'-commands to get the data from the living room HDs.
Therefore the 2 raspi-slaves have their own video- and music-databases.
You know the problems (actualizing each raspi database after adding 1 or more media files, no synchronization of viewing states).
So: I would like to have connected the two slave-pis by mysql or mariaDB so they won't have to use their own databases..

Question-1:
Is it right that there is no chance installing mysql (or mariaDB) on Openelec systems?

I fear (if the answer is YES) that I have to build up the 3 systems from scratch:
- installation of Raspbian light
- installation of mysql or mariaDB
- installation of Kodi
- definition of all options, configuration of the skin

Question-2:
Or is it possible to install my Openelec Kodi-backups in Raspbian-Kodi?
(Openelec Configuration => System => Create System and Kodi Backup)

Thx in advance for Your help and Your answers.

@DougieLawson
thx for Your fast reply.
Your proposed solution fits my problem very well - I'm very delighted.
The article You've added is quite understandable for me.

BUT:
I can't find the docker add-on in my Kodi repositories !
My versions:
OpenELEC (official) Version: 8.0.4
Kodi build: 17.3 Jun 2 2017

Chris Wilkinson wrote in his article: "From the Kodi Confluence main menu, navigate to SYSTEM -> Add-ons -> Install from repository -> LibreELEC Add-ons -> Services -> Docker"
After I've clicked on 'Install from repository' there is no entry 'LibreELEC Add-on' (okay, I have OpenELEC) but 'OpenELEC Add-on official' and 'OpenELEC Add-on unofficial'. Unfortunately there I can't find any 'Docker' entries.

Can You please help me again?

First of all should I migrate from OpenElec to LibreElec?
Seems to be easy and secure concerning data losses.

LibreElec was last updated April 2018 and uses the same base code as OpenElec so yes updating would get a newer version:

Regards Docker it states on the page linked to ""Docker on RPi/RPi2 is only available with OE 7.0""

https://github.com/lrusak/lrusak-openel ... /README.md

Though not confirmed it would appear LibreElec includes a Docker add-on, googling can be time consuming.....

Posting the same question on the OpenELEC or LibreELEC forum would be a better option. This whole Open vs Libre thing is too confusing to me. I'm happy running plain Kodi and Kodi-pvr-hts on my Raspberries.

I've just migrated one of my raspis from OpenElec to LibreElec 8.2.5. Everything went fine.
I found the Docker add-on in the specific repository and installed it. No problems.
Now I will follow the contents of Your link above.
With Your first answer You have pushed me in the absolutely right direction!

Thx for Your help

For info - OpenElec is almost a dead end these days. The bulk of the OE devs moved to LibreElec quite a while ago.
