PI3B + VLC + Stereotool... performances issue

Sat Sep 29, 2018 4:29 pm

HI All, new in the forum and new to Raspberry too...

After some trials I manage to get this "working"

1- PI3B with HiFi_Berry DAC+
2- VLC on Raspbian
3- Stereotool for ALSA (www.stereotool.com)

On Raspbian I set a loopback interface at 48000 Hz sample rate
VLC is set to send output to this loopback interface
Stereotool has the Input card set to this Loopback interface and sample rate aligned to 48KHz
Stereotool has the Output card set to HiFi Berry DAC+

the "chain " works but the buffers of Stereotool get empty very soon, or at least this is what I believe is happening considering the graphics from ST. My assupmtion seems to be supported by some underrun messages in the CLI where I stertedof Stereotool

Stereotool for ALSA is started "as is", no parameters. Also loopback interface has been set like this

[email protected]:~ $ sudo su
[email protected]:/home/pi# modprobe snd-aloop
[email protected]:/home/pi# aplay -l
.....
card 2: Loopback [Loopback], device 0: Loopback PCM [Loopback PCM]
Subdevices: 8/8
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
Subdevice #4: subdevice #4
Subdevice #5: subdevice #5
Subdevice #6: subdevice #6
Subdevice #7: subdevice #7
card 2: Loopback [Loopback], device 1: Loopback PCM [Loopback PCM]
Subdevices: 8/8
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
Subdevice #4: subdevice #4
Subdevice #5: subdevice #5
Subdevice #6: subdevice #6
Subdevice #7: subdevice #7

There is a lot of GUI, VLC is in GUI, ST is in GUI, I am in XRDP with the PI etc....

Any hint about how to make this work ok ? or am I putting my PI under too much pressure? Any command or setting to check what is going on at ALSA level first?

Thanks in advance

Franco

I'm just curious.. what is the purpose of this setup ?

There is a program ( and package ) called "dstat" that can give you cpu/net/disk load each second.

Hi topguy, thanks for the reply.

I started with Kodi on PI as a home small mediacenter, then wanted to add Stereotool to digital process audio ( I listen songs from the 70's to now).

This is it, PI is fine with KODI or VLC itself etc but Steretool uses a massive amount of resources

Will check with the dstat

As per dstat tool CPU is not so bad but I cannot understand from the other parameters if there is any sign of memory issue... can you please help ? See attach

You still have a quite high average CPU usage, but disk and net is not stealing much at least.

I guess the "top" command ( should already be installed ) should give you the info about which processes are using the CPU and also if they steal all your memory.
A slightly more fancy program "htop" ( package of same name ) also show load on each core and more understandable memory overview.

Seconding the recommendation of top and htop. htop's graphic bars make it easy to understand. Glances is very heavy but fully-featured program for looking at what your Linux computer is doing.
