Kodi vs OpenAuto vs alternative for car media player

Mon Apr 23, 2018 12:58 pm

Hi all,

I am new here and relatively new to the rpi world so please go easy on me!

Looking to start a car stereo/media player project for my car. Current thoughts are to go with an rpi3 and the 7" touchscreen, as it's an old car I don't have much of a stereo there anyway so this will be replacing it entirely. i've got an amp sorted and have ideas on how to power the rpi etc. My main concern is the software side and getting the rpi to do everything I would like it to. So far the options I've seen are OpenAuto or Kodi. I do like Android Auto and would like to have that side of it. However, for times when I don't want to plug my phone in, I'd still like to be able to play CDs, my thought was to get a USB CD drive and/or FM radio and possibly an Aux, is there some way I could get this to work? Would be quite nice to get it to work all within the same interface, is there some way I could get them all to work together? Maybe have Android Auto as an option within Kodi or something?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated
