I am really suprised My Samsung TV remote can control XBIAN!

As title... never expected to work as Pi do not have IR receiver and my Pi is behind a wall.

I accidentally used my Samsung LED TV's remote to control Xbian, it worked. After a few menu movements I realized that it was impossible!

Here is my theory: they both connect to the same LAN, somehow Xbian / XBMC detects the existence of my Samsung LED TV, talked to it, and my Samsung TV agreed to broadcast the IR signals to XBIAN via local network?

I am really surprised, or impressed...

Can anyone explains it?

thanks

It's called CEC (I think it's something like AnyNET on Samsung TV's), where a device can be controlled through the hdmi port :)

I had never heard of CEC til after I joined the forums. Just found this post maybe it explains it some.

All I know for sure is 1 wire in the HDMI sends data to control the device in this case the Pi

Hmmm ... but only a few remote buttons work. Exit and Return do nothing.

Bloody hell!!! It is magic. I have an lg tv, every time it spewed out the info about cec i thought it was something to do with tv card.

Same on lg can navigate through menus and select things with the ok button but there is no response from the back button. The magic has failed.

HDMI CEC is absolutely brilliant.

Finally the consumer electronics industry does something to address the user nightmare, and environmental disaster, that was the breeding remotes issue.

You can actually reprogram the buttons on the remote, so that you can use Exit and Back on the remote.

I was also surprised the first time I pressed my TV remote accidentally and XBMC responded.... that's absolutely fantastic.
