Problems with PI as wireless audio receiver

Sun Aug 27, 2017 9:45 am

Hi there!

I have just finished transforming my PI 3 model B into a fully working AirPlay audio receiver, using shairport-sync.
But I have now encountered a problem that I did not foresee - The Wi-Fi signal.
The access-point is 12 meters away from the PI and the room where I'm using my macbook and iPhone(audiosources) - the PI and the audiosources is both operating in the same room - behind two brick walls.
Because of the distance and the brick walls, the signal is not that good and it results in crackiling audio and sometimes not even audio at all... when I'm using AirPlay.

I have thought of two solutions to the problem that I really want to get some feedback on:

1. Buying a external Wi-Fi antenna and connect it to the pi, to get a better signal
or
2. Stop using Shairport-sync/Wi-Fi and instead use the integrated bluetooth chip in the PI, and transform it into a bluetooth receiver (http://www.instructables.com/id/Turn-yo ... uetooth-A/)

I appreciate you answers :)

All the best.

You cannot connect an external antenna to a RPi3. Perhaps you are confusing an antenna with a USB Wi-Fi dongle. Yes a good one of those might help.

Bluetooth usually has an even shorter range than Wi-Fi.

Possible solutions are to put a Wi-Fi repeater in the intermediate room ie between the two walls. Or forget wireless and use a pair of ethernet over mains wiring adaptors.
