Powering RPI in Car

Hi There,
I've been testing the use of volumio mpd for an in car audio system. I'm trying to understand the simplest way of powering the Pi from the car.
I currently have it connected to the cigarette lighter socket using a standard USB cable. Obviously this is not a long term solution, I notice that some people are using UPS such as these and then just connecting into 5v cigarette lighter adapter.

Other people seem to be using these http://www.mausberrycircuits.com/
At the moment I also have a small TL-WR702N router connected, but I was wondering if it's possible to do away with this and connect to the raspberry pi over my phone without the router??
Any guidance would be much appreciated
