Preparation for additional codecs???

Thu Aug 09, 2012 10:37 pm

Did anyone see this?

Does it mean that there is hardware decoding implementation coming to RPi? (Mpeg2/DTS...)

Wow that would me awesome :)
And considering who replied with "maybe", I'm feeling a little bit more confident that it's true :D

whoa, this would be awesome! Any chance of "maybe" a list of some codecs that "may be" being worked on/considered... I'd LOVE to hit cancel on my handbrake queue transcoding all 190 of my SD mpeg2 movies to H.264. Although, the space savings is nice but I'm not sure it's worth all the power I'm using leaving the system running these transcoding jobs 24/7.

Looks like it's goig to be INSTA implemented in XBian when this is out if it is so easy :D. Probably even a non restore (internet) update. Just wget a script and execute ( like the just released XBian 0.5 Hotfix).

My crystal ball says maybe at least Dolby decoding and h264 encoding.

Code: Select all

$ strings arm128_start.elf |grep \\.vll > vll_new

MPEG 2 is harder to tell, think it shares a .vll with other video stuff.

Now the big question would be, what would we need to buy to activate it?

Well if this (+dtsdec.vll) refer to hardware decoding DTS it's good enough for me :)

Looking at the list Max posted,

Am I right in guessing that ddpdec.vll refers to Dolby Digital Plus decoding?

Maybe. DDP is also known as AC3.

If you look at more differences between the files, you'll see a Dolby copyright too (you can just search for Dolby in a hex editor and you'll see it), so I guess you're right.

In light of the recent codec licenses for mpeg 2 and vc-1 I was wondering when we can expect the licences for dts and ac3?

These are the ones I'm really interested in.

I'm in the same boat, really would love hardware DTS decoding
