I'm gonna wait until you find out how to get a .deb as I've tried it multiple times and I don't seem to get it working :D

It seems that you need these dependencies installed:

Code: Select all

libmicrohttpd10 libmysqlclient-dev libtinyxml-dev libpcrecpp0v5
Tell me if you have issues. :D

Kratos, you are a star! This is working really well! First issue I've encountered is that it freezes the pi on a black screen when trying to exit the app - is this the same for you?

Yes, it does have the black screen bug. I worked on a fix, and shall show you how to fix it in a bit.

Black screen bug fix:

1. Create a startkodi script

Code: Select all

sudo nano startkodi
2. Paste this into it:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
fbset_bin=`which fbset`
xset_bin=`which xset`
xrefresh_bin=`which xrefresh`
if [ ! -z $fbset_bin ]; then
  DEPTH2=`$fbset_bin | head -3 | tail -1 | cut -d " " -f 10`
fi
kodi "$@"
if [ ! -z $fbset_bin ]; then
  if [ "$DEPTH2" == "8" ]; then
    DEPTH1=16
  else
    DEPTH1=8
  fi
  $fbset_bin -depth $DEPTH1 > /dev/null 2>&1
  $fbset_bin -depth $DEPTH2 > /dev/null 2>&1
fi
if [ ! -z $xset_bin ] && [ ! -z $xrefresh_bin ]; then
  if [ -z $DISPLAY ]; then
    DISPLAY=":0"
  fi

  $xset_bin -display $DISPLAY -q > /dev/null 2>&1
    if [ "$?" == "0" ]; then
      $xrefresh_bin -display $DISPLAY > /dev/null 2>&1
    fi
fi
VT="$(fgconsole)"
if [ "$VT" ]; then
  sudo chvt 7
  sudo chvt "$VT"
fi

3. Make it executable:

Code: Select all

sudo chmod +x startkodi
4. Copy to /usr/local/bin

Code: Select all

sudo cp startkodi /usr/local/bin
Create a desktop file:
1.

Code: Select all

sudo nano Desktop/kodi.desktop
2. Paste this into it:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Kodi Media Center
GenericName=Media Center
Comment=Manage and view your media
Exec=startkodi %u
Icon=kodi
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=AudioVideo;Video;Player;TV;
3. Copy to applications:

Code: Select all

sudo cp kodi.desktop /usr/share/applications
If it works, tell me ;) .

Nice one, Kratos! Yes, it works... only stumbling block I hit was -
sudo cp kodi.desktop /usr/share/applications
should it be?

Code: Select all

sudo cp /Desktop/kodi.desktop /usr/share/applications
Only slight downer (and it is slight) is that you have to 'repaint' the desktop back in (if you see what I mean)... screen goes black, but as you lasso areas of the screen with a held mouse button, the background and taskbar reappear. Better that than a hard reset, though - great stuff :D

More feedback!

I've been trying Kodi 17 and it's supersmooth, but crashed hard when I tried to scan movies to the library (only about a dozen); from that point I could only get to the splash before it crashed again. I had to delete /.kodi to get it to get it to start again. I have a crashlog, if you can advise how to get it to you? EDIT: here.

I've also found a quick way around the blank screen/paint your desktop back in problem: switching to another tty and back to tty7 (ctrl + alt + F6, then ctrl + alt + F7); I was power cycling before :?

Some problems playing certain mkv files, but I don't know if that's a pi codec issue; would mediainfo output help?

Thanks a lot for all your testing! I took a look at your log file, and it seems as if it is a Kodi 17 bug. All your dependencies were installed. I think it must just be a Kodi 17 bug, but I am not sure. As far as the black screen bug lasso thing, I have had this happen on Raspbian Jessie a few times, but never on Ubuntu MATE. I shall see if I can duplicate the problem.

No worries; excited to be able to help.

Fwiw, the lasso effect happens with marco with and without compositing - I've not tested compiz.

Thanks for checking the crashlog; understandable that there's still some kinks to be worked out with the kodi 17 alpha, to be fair. Subjectively though, it does seem to run a bit quicker than the Jarvis build, and I do love the new default skins, esp estouchy; nice and wife friendly :)

By the way, is there a way of installing the 16 and 17 builds at the same time? I had 16, then installed the 17 .deb, but it didn't 'take', so I uninstalled 16 to add 17.

Incidentally, did you spot that Wimpy on the mate forum was asking about working with you and setting up a ppa? That would be boss... :D

Strike my previous comment about certain files not playing in Kodi 17... just needed to set gpu_mem=128 in the memory settings section of /boot/.config.txt - you lose a little memory in desktop use I guess, but a fair trade off to get 1080p working!

Sorry Kratos, I think the library creation issue runs deeper, as it does the same thing (for me, at least) on Jarvis... :(

Log here.

Don't know whether Wimpy's build has the same issue; I'll beg him for a .deb and compare...

AHA! Could you install libcec on your system.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libcec
I am not sure, but it looks like that is the issue...

Kratos[/s]

Scratch that.

Your log says:

Code: Select all

Program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
I have no idea why though...

Potential fix lifted from Google:

- In kodi, go to Settings -> Video -> Acceleration
- Set Deconding method to Software

I can't see that option? Settings (on expert level) > Video > Acceleration gives me the option to allow/disallow OMXPlayer and MMAL acceleration, limit GUI updates during playback and reset to default...

Interestingly, leaving MMAL & OMXplayer acceleration unticked made no difference to 1080p playback, but Kodi 16 still crashed when I tried to add a single film to the library...

Yep - it's rum alright. I even tried creating the library on a windows install, exporting it then importing it into yours… no dice, unfortunately. I guess having the library enabled requires kodi to configure quite a bit to get skin integration etc. Will keep googling, though :) (but not tonight - it's my wedding anniversary, and hunching over a little box with flickering lights in the 'man-cave' is not considered romantic, for some reason!)

Happy anniversary!

I am currently working on organizing all the files. I will then upload them all to Google Drive for you all to try out. I successfully completed builds of Kodi 16 and 17 for both Ubuntu MATE 15 and 16. On Jarvis, I had no issues adding Music to the library.
