Raspberry Pi 4B Home Media Server

Tue May 18, 2021 9:41 am

I need some advice on the setup for a home media server using the RPI4B. I recently got an ICY BOX IB-3640SU3E2 /SU3 external HDD enclosure, (https://images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com ... xyo8RS.pdf).

My plan as it is now is to get an RPI4B and run Kodi on it as a home media server to stream video, audio etc. over my local network to my Windows 10 laptop, desktop and Ipad Mini 4 tablet.

The HDD enclosure has 2 separate ~940 GiB HDDs for a total capacity of about 1.88 TiB. It has 2 more slots for a total of 4.

I've found these tutorials on how to set up Kodi and get the Kodi app installed on my iPad Mini 4 as well as stream it to my PCs using VLC:
Are there any configurations/setup procedures I should follow regarding RAID to treat the HDDs as single drive and have it play nicely with Kodi? Or is RAID unnecessary here?

And lastly, which cooler case do you recommend for this application?
Helpful answers are appreciated. I usually respond to Tweets directed at me. JWST is the Sagrada Família of spacecrafts. I code in Python on Windows 10 and Raspberry Pi OS.

Kodi is unnecessary for streaming. Use a samba or miniDLNA server instead.

As for RAID, it isn't really necessary. Just mount the drives somewhere sensible and configure your server apropriately. RAID can also cause mroe problems than it solves. Depending which RAID mode you uss, losing one drive can take out the entire array.

Is there a way to access the Samba server from an iPad Mini 4 connected to the same network? I know it’ll probably work with VLC Media Player.

Any recommendations for a DLNA streaming app? Maybe this one is good, it says it has support for DLNA servers: https://apps.apple.com/se/app/vlc-for-m ... d650377962

Yes there is. I use an app called "File Explorer" on my iOS devices to browse my Samba shares. It's pretty nice, works well, and the dev is quite responsive.

And yes, VLC on iOS supports Samba servers. I just connected to my music server with vlc to make sure it wasn't false advertising
