Still no OS for music with bluetooth connection to speaker ?

Mon Jan 25, 2021 10:18 am

Hello all,

In 2019, I asked on this forum if it was possible to connect a RPI to a bluetooth speaker BUT with an OS with a nice and easy to use user interface like Volumio, Runeaudio, ... (viewtopic.php?f=35&t=236731&p=1447515), compatible with touchscreen and without buying or adding any extra features or objects (like a bluetooth DAC if it exists for example, just a RPI)

At that time there were no possibilities to use such an OS with a bluetooth speaker connected to the RPI itself. Well according to one of the last answers it was possible but not natively and was a pain in the ... to make it work (and I am not a rocket scientist nor really smart).

Is there now some OS I can use on the RPI with a nice music-looking-gui that can be used by kids (nothing too complicated like MOC : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_on_Console) and that can connect to a bluetooth speaker. For information, music will be on a USB stick plugged into the RPI. LibreElec and OSMC are not what I am looking for.

I am really looking for a "music style" interface and nothing like a regular player (https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/01/bes ... untu-linux). I just want my family to touch some "folder" on the touchscreen and then play their music through the bluetooth speaker in the house. Nothing too fancy like spotify, just a regular USB stick with the musics plugged in the RPI. As far as I know I don't need anything else (no web interface required, ...)

I have a RPI3b+ and will have a RPI4.

This is exactly what I am looking for :

Raspberry Pi Operating System since December 2020 uses PulseAudio as its Sound Server so Bluetooth support has improved greatly:

RaspiOS includes VLC Media Player which has oodles of customisations to the look and feel.
The information is out there....you just have to let it in.

if there are no OS that suites your requirements....based on your preferences....

then the only course of action is....make one yourself...

...and not rely upon other's charity....
"Don't come to me with 'issues' for I don't know how to deal with those
Come to me with 'problems' and I'll help you find solutions"

Some people be like:
"Help me! Am drowning! But dont you dare touch me nor come near me!"

I have unfortunately seen nothing anywhere near the simplicity of volumio/... Damn...

I don't get your point here ? And as I already said I am not an expert and am definitively not capable of doing this.

I'm not asking anyone to do it for me if this OS does not exist, I am just kindly asking if a solution exists. Maybe someone has already made one or has an easy solution to do what I would like... name it charity if you want... other people would maybe call it help...

I wrote my own using python and it works with Bluetooth...

https://github.com/Gordon999/Pi-MP3_Player

Various gui options.

You need the music in the specified directories.

Wow, not the sexiest GUI I have ever seen but it seems to have everything I am looking for in terms of functionalities !
You also provided a doc with easy information to launch your script when starting the PI, yay !

I will still wait for other answers to check if someone knows if there are something with a more polished GUI. Don't take it too seriously, I just don't like yours, BUT it does not mean it's bad or ugly at all (it reminds me of an old music player for microsoft windows ages ago !)

Edit : In the meantime, I found moodeaudio (http://moodeaudio.org/) and max2play (https://www.max2play.com/) which MIGHT have what I am talking about... Still doing some research at the moment.

It was originally designed to be simple and used on the pi 7" touchscreen.

To start at boot just add

@/usr/bin/python3 /home/pi/MP3_Player.py

To

/etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart

And boot to gui.

You can try Peppy Player. It has both Web and non-web UI. There are several disk images available for different displays/touchscreens:
https://github.com/project-owner/PeppyP ... isk-Images
Just install the one which you need, enable Bluetooth:
https://github.com/project-owner/Peppy/ ... ig.txt#L27
then configure Bluetooth:
https://github.com/project-owner/Peppy. ... oth-device
don't forget to reboot after that.

Best regards

I have checked Peppy Player, I have found the music player but when i check here : https://github.com/project-owner/Peppy. ... le-Browser and https://github.com/project-owner/Peppy. ... ile-Player i find nothing about playing random music in a folder.

It is a bit sad that for the official touchscreen it is still needed to use command lines (https://github.com/project-owner/PeppyP ... ficial-7.0) instead of a configuration button in the GUI or some automated system.

Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean saying 'to use command lines'. You can set any configuration property (including Bluetooth) using the Configuration Web UI:
https://github.com/project-owner/Peppy. ... figuration
You can also reboot from there.
If you have any questions related to the player you can use the dedicated thread here:

I was talking about the page I have copy/pasted where there are command lines explained to configure the screen : https://github.com/project-owner/PeppyP ... ficial-7.0

Edit : Maybe this is natively in the disc image ? This is the first section :

This disk image is based on the Headless Disk Image and has the following additional software and configuration:
Screen was rotated (lcd_rotate=2 in /boot/config.txt).
Rainbow splash disabled (disable_splash=1 in /boot/config.txt)
Peppy Player was configured to work with GUI displayed in LCD, Peppy Player splash screen was configured.

It means it is pre-configured with everything explained below in the section "Configure Peppy Player for display" in https://github.com/project-owner/PeppyP ... ficial-7.0 ?

Hi,

That wiki explains how to configure display if you want to do that yourself. There is no need to do that if you use the disk image for the display.

I think that I will use moodeaudio, I really like the UI.

For those interested : https://moodeaudio.org/ + https://moodeaudio.org/img/groove-salad.jpeg

I still need to verify that everything works correcty.

Try the Rpi4 with the 64 bit operating system. I use audacity and Goodvibes software with good success and a little aggravation. The 32 bit never worked. One very important caveat - do not do an upgrade or you will have to start over. Updates are ok. I just copied and pasted the URLs from several websites onto the Goodvibes software. This part is a little tedious however once it's done you don't have to do it again. Another point: Once everything is working copy the micro sd card to a backup just in case..... It's cheap insurance.

Would OSMC not suit your needs? I use it to stream music and 1080p movies from my NAS on a 2B just fine. I use mine with a cheap amazon kodi remote with usb receiver which I plugged into the PI.

rAudio https://github.com/rern/rAudio-1 (formerly known as RuneAudio) will send and receive Bluetooth. I listen on a Bluetooth speaker around the house and also send audio from my phone to my RPi. Moode will do it too but rAudio has a much friendlier UI. So will Volumio but their bluetooth requires paid subscription.

OSMC does not suit my needs, it looks like a media center more than just a music player. Just take a look at volumio and RuneAudio you will instantly understand. OSMC could look like this but it would require some tweaks. These 2 programs are native audio players.

Yes, I like RuneAudio, but for some reason that I forgot since the beginning of this topic, I chose moodeaudio, this is why I wrote :

edit : But I did not know that Volumio require to pay subscription for the bluetooth + Ok I remember why I chose moodeaudio, because of this old post : https://www.runeaudio.com/forum/bluetoo ... t5807.html

Don't worry guys, the topic is closed for me, I found my solution (read everything ;) ) I jut don't know how to show it as solved.
