Is it possible to get digital audio output without HAT?

Sat May 23, 2020 1:53 pm

Hi - I'm trying to get a digital audio output from the Pi. Is there a way to do that? Ideally can I configure the 3.5mm audio out to generate a digital signal instead of the analog signal? Failing that can I get it from the second HDMI port? Or even from the GPIO? I realise there are various HATs to do the job. The idea is to plug a Pi straight into the DAC of my HiFi system. I've looked online and surprisingly I can only find HAT solutions...

No.

Yes if you have a HDMI audio extractor. No if you meant cutting up a cable.

Yes but you'd be recreating one of the HATs.

Thank you trejan. Just to be sure, I can't just solder a couple of wires to the relevant GPIO pins to get the digital audio signal - I have to go out and buy the relevant HAT? Or presumably I could find a USB device to output coax and/or S/PDIF which may be an easier more compact solution...

This will give you some pointers to PWM / GPIO

No. Not compatible for protocol or voltage. You need something to convert it from I2S to S/PDIF optical/coax.
