RPI4 + TV HAT + DVB-T2 x265

Mon Nov 18, 2019 1:50 pm

Hi,

my country (Croatia) has started migration to DVB-T2 x265 HEVC broadcast. As my TV doesn't support this and I like the picture my TV provides I was wondering is this setup feasible for everyday TV watching?

RPI4 4GB RAM + RPI TV HAT + Tvheadend + KODI

Or would it be better to install RPI TV hat onto existing RPI 3B+ and use it as a server for RPI4 (I know that RPI 3B+ isn't powerful enough to decode x265)?

Any advice or different setu0p idea are most welcome.

Thank you and regards

Have RPi3b+ with TV hat. Not enough CPU power to decode 1080p HD HEVC in the same region of Croatia (D04 MUX M2).
But, if you use .m3u playlist generated from TVHeadend, Rpi 4b with installed LibreElec will do it flawless. (not with Raspbian Buster !)

Hi,

thank you very much, I'll feel free to contact you. If I understand correctly you are using server - client Setup (scenario 2) I mentioned?

For logistics reasons I would prefer All in one box so all other advice are welcome.

Yes, it is scenario 2. And the best is that multiple users in the same network can connect to TVh server simultaneously if they are watching programs from the same MUX. Work perfectly !
VLC 3.0.8 Vetinari recomended for Linux and Media Player Classic for Windows.

Great thanks!
What bothers me the most is Wi-Fi - I'm not sure if b/g/n 2.4 GHz (my router support only these) has enough bandwidth to push HD signal to other PI.

Thats why I would prefer Solution 1 (All in one PI4) assuming its feasible.

1080p HD HEVC for Croatian national T2 channels use about 3 Mbit/sec and about 2 Mbit/sec for 720p.
Measured with NMON and with VLC Vetinari.
Also, my 3b+ is in the same room with WiFi hotspot (router, only 2,4) and 4 user can work simultaneuously without issue.
Picture: 3 different channels at same time (from one MUX) ; Kaffeine, VLC, MediaPlayer,(Linux Mint, A10, 8GB).

This is very good news, thank you. I'm talking to you using this thread instead of mail so that other potential builders can find anwers I was looking for ;)

"Scenario 2" was more successful in my case.
Of course, feel free to contact me at e-mail,
because I have specific data that depends at Croatian DVB-T2 network.
