Unable to start dbus-daemon on Raspbian Lite

Thu Apr 12, 2018 9:40 am

Hi,
I get the following error when I try to start a dbus program.

Code: Select all

 Unable to autolaunch a dbus-daemon without a $DISPLAY for X11
I think this is because Raspbian Lite does not have a GUI display.
Can you please suggest a way to get around this issue?
Thanks.

What program are you trying to launch?

If a post offends you, just put that poster on your foes list, and be done with it (and with them).

To do otherwise, risks being banned.

DBus is mainly used to send messages between GUI programs, programs that need the X-server.

You can set the environment variable DISPLAY with "export DISPLAY=:0.0" which will point to a non running X-server on localhost.
But I guess that will only give you a different error message.

You also have the option to install and start an X-server. Using https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xvfb for example.

Can you please suggest a technique for inter process communication for non-GUI application?

Named pipes, shared memory, sockets are the ones that immediately spring to mind, or MQTT, even.

No, I can't think of anything funny that won't offend someone if they want it to...
