My guess would be that it's a filepath problem (i'm not alone either: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4241 ... urned-null).
Do you actually have the xml file saved in that folder? The post you linked to suggests that the files might actually be saved in /usr/share/doc/opencv-doc/examples/haarcascades/haarcascades/
