installing latest meld

Sat Jan 04, 2020 8:39 pm

How do you get the latest version of meld installed on the rpi (what are the proper commands/steps)?
https://meldmerge.org

using apt-get install meld installs a rather old version (3.16) instead of the current 3.20

pip3 seems to fail with a screen load of errors.

Raspbian (Debian) is not a 'rolling' type distribution. Instead they use a tested stable philosophy which means that package versions are locked and do not change until the next major release (except for security updates). Major releases are approximately every 2 years.
So either wait for the next release "Bullseye" or obtain the source code and compile yourself.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated Raspbian Buster w/ Desktop OS.

I have the "tar" file.. .what are the step/commands you are referring to to perform the compile/install?

There is a development page in the meld home page
https://meldmerge.org/development.html
According to these descriptions, this should be simple. I tried it here (get from git, run python code) but found various problems with the availability of supporting libraries.

So you couldn't get it to install? I was wondering if I was doing it wrong..sounds like the program isn't ready to use, or their new install is buggy.
