I'm new to MQTT.

What are the pros and cons of the different MQTT flavors for use in SSH Python programing of Pi devices? Where best to invest my time learning?

See
https://www.eclipse.org/paho/
https://mosquitto.org/

paho is the client part
mosquitto is the server (broker) part which you can run on your pi

there are server available on the net, e.g. adafruit io or from eclipse https://iot.eclipse.org/getting-started/

If you want to learn, look for paho, mqtt and mqtt.fx .

there is not too much you need bother with beyond hosting or addressing a broker, and understanding the topic/payload paths used, not exactly on the money but it may help to think of the topic as the primary key element and the payload the data element of an olde worlde record ;)

have fun..
