Gpio button raspberry loading retropie

Hi, i'm very noob about linux e python.. I'm able to install retropie on raspberry 3b but two time ago i found a rb534 vintage shell for raspberry and i have an idea.
I d like to start raspberry by pressing power button and after that pressing 1 of 7 button i start a single emulator (NES c64....)
Can you help me?

You can definitely connect 7 buttons to GPIOs (pins on the Raspberry Pi) and write code (e.g. Python) to read them. I imagine it should be possible to have that code run in the background, and switch emulators when it detects a button press.
