Installing GPIOZero on Wheezy

Tue Feb 02, 2016 11:54 am

I run Cotswold Raspberry Jam and whilst doing a GPIO Zero tutorial I seemed to hit a problem installing GPIO Zero on Wheezy.

My preferred solution is to install a fresh Jessie image and not worry about it.

However, for kids who brought along their own Pi and a Wheezy image, which we simply didn't have time to upgrade to Jessie, I got:

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~# apt-get install python3-gpiozero
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
python3-gpiozero : Depends: python3-spidev but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
Is this just some strange problem with that specific machine, or is this a more general issue with Wheezy?

I have tried

Code: Select all

sudo apt-mark unhold python3-spidev
but was met with the response:

Code: Select all

python3-spidev was already not hold.
Any hints other than "upgrade to Jessie" (I know!) much appreciated.

If gpiozero depends on spidev, should it not be installed then?

Code: Select all

apt-get install python3-spidev python3-gpiozero
...except that there does not seem to be such Debian package - is it Raspbian specific or is the gpiozero dependency configured wrong?

No, it doesn't currently work.

Edit: actually, installing it through pip should work!

So:

Code: Select all

sudo pip-3.2 install spidev
sudo pip-3.2 install gpiozero
??
