VNC log in without a network

Hello,

I was wondering if you can log into a Raspberry Pi using VNC without a wifi network.

I have a wireless usb for my raspberry pi and an iPad 1 with VNC viewer. I have been able to successfully get the VNC Server to start on boot on the pi and also log into it using VNC viewer on the iPad at my house.

The scenario I imagine is that I am on a plane for hours, and I have a battery pack for the Pi and my iPad. Both have wifi so there must be a way to connect the two together without the existence of a router like what I have at home.

I would love to do this without jailbreaking my iPad.

Em - don't think security would be keen on remote wi-fi controlled devices on an airplane :(

Come to think about it, I wouldn't like the person sitting next to me do be doing it much either :(

Ok that was completely unhelpful and beside the point.

I want to be able to remote in through wifi between an ipad and the Pi anywhere without having to have a static IP address like on my home network, or being restricted to doing it through a network.

Bluetooth would also be acceptable.

Search the guides for making your RPi a wifi hotspot. Apparently very easy. Then connect your iPad to it via WiFi.

VNC should work as normal over that wifi link.

The poster who replied above has a VERY valid point.

A Pi, in a case, or out of a case, with a battery pack, on an airplane, or going through security, is going to look utterly terrible for you, and you can absolutely expect a reaming of some variety.

Advice: Don't do it.

(Yes yes I know the concept of a Pi with a battery and a case is no different to say, an iPad or a phone etc, but really... think hard about how many non-geeks know what a Pi is, and what they would look like to airport security, hooked up to a battery).

If the iPad could do USB tethering like an Android device could, i.e. if it was jailbroken, then that's another option.

@tony - Ta :)

A more HELPFUL solution, since you think not being held in a little room at an airport for a few days is not an issue :) is to use your phone (assuming 'droid or equivalent) in a wif-fi hotspot mode to allow the IPad and the RPi to both use it.

It has the advantage of being no different than being at home (I have mine setup to use same SSID as home router so my laptop/RPi don't know the difference and there is no messing with any settings on anything

Hope that's more what you were looking for.

Simon
PS PLEASE don't do it on a plane :)
