Beginning raspberry pi game programming book

Thu Nov 01, 2012 9:23 am

Hi,
I have this book byMartin Bishop and am making slow but steady progress. I need to download some sourcecode from the web site including some images used for the game. I have, eventually, managed to find the download link and get a .gz file. when I try to extract this I get an unknown file type which isnt recognised by anything I can find, no .png images, as expected.
Any ideas? I cant really get on and I have managed less than 30 lines of code so far :?

What's the link to the file? You should be able to extract a .gz file with "tar -xf path/to/file"

Unfortunately the zip files are only for those that have purchased the book have you tried posting comments on his site. I can't find any contact info there but it does look like he actively responds to the comments he receives.

When you say unzip are you trying to unzip these on Windows? It would be best to try it on the Pi and copy the files over.

You would download on the Pi with wget an example is below:

Code: Select all

wget -U midori http://www.url.com/example/files.tar.gz
tar -zxvf files.tar.gz
Instructions for any platform can be found here if the Pi isn't connected to the internet.

If the file is corrupt only the Author can help you out and I don't know if they are a member on this forum. If they aren't you might suggest they join :D

Thanks,
I do own the book on an e-reader but have not had any instructions other than those on the web page.
It aught to be posible to do all this in the GUI shouldnt it?

Most desktop file managers should handle it. If you can't open the file at all then it may be corrupt.
