Raspberry PI Sonic Sensor for Pallet Detection

I am working on a project at work. The project involves using a raspberry pi 3 and sonic sensor to detect if a wooden pallet is present or not and having this present/not present state being read over Ethernet from another client/PC. Anyone know if this is possible and how could I get this accomplished as my programming skills are minimal at best.

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Yes, that is achievable.

Perhaps break down the job into smaller parts and join them together at the end?

Plenty of examples of using sonar rangers.
