Shutting down

Fri Aug 03, 2012 5:13 am

I am complete novice. I received an sd card with Debian wheezy preloaded. All started up fine. However when I click on red power button right screen the only options are log off or reboot. There is no shutdown option offered. So how do I shut down my pi without turning off power.

I use

sudo shutdown -hP now

Off course on the Pi this will not remove the power but it safely shuts down the system.

I have the text in a file called off in /usr/local/bin
[email protected]:~$ cat /usr/local/bin/off
#!/bin/bash
sudo shutdown -hP now
[email protected]:~$
To make the file executable you need to

sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/off

You can then just type off to shutdown your Pi.

As a side note, the graphical shutdown option is only available when you log in as root.

Just make sure you umount before you halt. The FAT32 boot partition is easily corrupted.
