Would Debian "squeeze" work on PC

Fri Jul 06, 2012 1:01 pm

Hi, Guys,
Still waiting for my Raspberry - ordered on 21 June and I am wondering if Debian "Squeeze" would work on a PC. For instance, can I install it on a CD and boot up from it just to see what to expect?
Many thanks,

Alex

debian squeeze [and wheezy] work on PC's - not the image for the RPi as it's a completely different processor
the qemu emulators are closest to what to expect

Yes,
You can run Debian on your PC, however not the exact image as distributed for the Pi. The Pi runs on ARM hardware. Your PC runs on x86.

Debian does images for both and I believe you can try one from a USB drive. Have a look at:

You can run an emulated version of a Raspberry Pi on a Windows PC to get a good idea of what you will see when you get your real Raspberry Pi.

For a version with Debian Squeeze, see the third post in this thread

I think it should be made clear, when we answer this sort of (repeating) post, that there are two distinct ways of interpreting (and thus answering) the question:

1) Can I run a Linux/Debian/like thing on my x86 PC (natively) - to get myself familiar with Linux stuff in general?

2) Can I run the Pi system (which is a heavily modified/customized version of stock Debian) on my x86 PC (via some sort of emulator software)?

The answer to both questions is, clearly, "Yes, but in very different ways".
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

Yes to both,
To run debian on your pc
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
just set it to make a bootable live debian
