Unable to install games from .tgz files

Sun Jun 28, 2020 6:03 pm

I wasn't sure where to post this but I have some programs that I downloaded on my Pi 3 B+ running Rasberry OS that are tar.gz format I have tried to install through the package installer program and attempted through the terminal but it just won't allow them to install can someone give me guidance on what to do (The programs are games for Linux ARM-based systems)

$ gunzip fileName.tar.gz
$ tar -xvf fileName.tar

Or do it in one go, saves having the decompressed tar file lingering around (and keeps the original compressed file)

Code: Select all

$ tar xavf filename.tar.gz
The a option passes the file through an appropriate decompresser based on file suffix (supports bzip2, gzip, xz, lzip, lzma, compress and probably a few others). Use z instead of a to specifically use gzip.

Also tar doesn't need the - before option letters (though it accepts them).

All you need is:

Code: Select all

tar xf filename.tar.gz
tar is more clever than you think!
It doesn't use the extension(s) to deduce the actions either.

mv filename.tar.gz filename.x
tar xf filename.x

works.

You can add the v option (verbose) to see the filenames
