Re: Pi2 - is the file transfer over ethernet better than B+

Just bought a nice USB3 hub with built in gigabit ethernet adapter for my laptop,
but will give it a go with the B+ & Pi-2 first:

Well, when you connect it to Pi, you will choke the usb port, which is usb 2.0, not 3.0 like the hub. And that Pi's usb port is not so strong to take so high speed (still 'weak' chips).
Anyway, would be interesting to see what real speed you can get with this equipement.

You really should power that hub externally.

If you can't power it externally, and only plug very low power devices into it, it may work.

Looks cool. Let us know how it goes, I'd like to see what network speed is possible.

Do you have an A+, because that would be a Stonkingly Good Thing™ if it works on an A+.

So... after reading every post in this forum and elsewhere mentioning the possibility of increasing network throughput with a Gigabit USB adapter, I sacrificed part of my wallet and a chunk of time this weekend to test and see for myself—how can I get the fastest network speeds possible, and how fast can the little Pi go on a network?

tl;dr
  • I tested four different 802.11n WiFi USB adapters I had laying around, and they got between 30-45 Mbps.
  • I tested the internal 10/100 NIC on two different B+s (I don't yet have my Pi 2), and it got about 94 Mbps
  • I tested a TRENDnet Gigabit USB 3.0 adapter, and it got a whopping 222 Mbps (nearly 30 MB/sec)!
The full test results (with all the methodology, using wget, rsync, and iperf for various tests) are located in this issue on GitHub: https://github.com/geerlingguy/raspberr ... e/issues/8.

In terms of real world impact, the results don't necessarily mean too much. Most people are running their Pis on microSD cards that couldn't even support a 30 MB/sec transfer rate—especially with random read/write! However, if you have a fast SD card, or if you have an application that requires faster streaming than 100 Mbps networking can provide, a Gigabit USB dongle is a very worthwhile investment.

I'm building a small cluster of Pis for demonstration purposes, and I'm doing many further tests on microSD cards, networking, etc., so I'll continue compiling benchmark results, and someday try to get them into some pretty graphs for all of you :)

I posted a better summary of my findings here: Getting Gigabit Networking on a Raspberry Pi.

And a pretty graph (if I can get it to work on these forums...):
