Cross compile kernel: which gcc?

Wed Apr 23, 2014 6:38 pm

Hi,

I'm cross compiling the Pi kernel from a x86 machine.
On the https://github.com/raspberrypi/tools/tr ... rm-bcm2708
I can find 2 hard-float compilers

1) arm-bcm2708hardfp-linux-gnueabi
2) gcc-linaro-arm-linux-gnueabihf-raspbian

which are a 4.7 and 4.8 version respectively.

this page suggests to use the former http://elinux.org/RPi_Kernel_Compilatio ... from_Linux
(which btw works very well)

what is the difference? what do people normally use? what is the linaro used for?

What is used to build the releases available via the download links?

It sounds like the page at http://elinux.org/RPi_Kernel_Compilatio ... from_Linux needs revising or updating.

I've used both previously, but it would be better to know which one we should be using.

No, I can't think of anything funny that won't offend someone if they want it to...
