Is the pi industrial grade?

Tue May 28, 2013 10:42 pm

I'm working on a project where a single board computer is required to run simple data logging (among other things) of traffic flow at signalized intersections. The Raspberry Pi seems like a great choice for my project, but it would need to be able to withstand the high temperatures of Arizona or the below freezing temperatures of Minnesota. Does anyone here know the temperature ratings of the components used on the Raspberry Pi?

I found somewhat of an answer in the faqs (should have looked there first  ) However, the faq didn't necessarily have a solid answer. I'll post it here in case anyone else has the same question and didn't look at the faq first: "The Raspberry Pi is built from commercial chips which are qualified to different temperature ranges; the LAN9512 is specified by the manufacturers being qualified from 0°C to 70°C, while the AP is qualified from -40°C to 85°C. You may well find that the board will work outside those temperatures, but we’re not qualifying the board itself to these extremes."

One Pi has been tested to -50 C or thereabouts, using a liquid nitrogen cooling setup. Did not work in LN2 at 77K though :-)
