Which setup you think gives me more stability?

Thu Jul 02, 2020 9:54 pm

Hi guys,

I have A PI 4 4GB rev 1.2

I am running the PI 4 24/7, all i need is stability.

What do you think does gives me better stability, A 32 bit or 64 bit Ubuntu image?

Thanks

Neither.
If you want a stable OS, go with RaspberryPi OS. you can't beat that stability of it IMHO.
One man's trash is another man's treasure! :) Pi's I have; Pi Zero, Pi Zero W, Pi 2 x2, Pi 3 x2, Pi 4 4GB x2.

Stability to do what?

The most stable Pi (as with any computer) is one that is turned off.

I have a Pi4 on soak test as a trial LAMP server and is 100% stable on RpiOS, it even has LXDE running so I can VNC into it. the only time it is rebooted is when an update requires a reboot, other than that its been running 24/7 for over a month now.

Why would you not use RpiOS?

I found out that the PI 4 is more stable at running youtube 24/7 with Ubuntu Mate installed via Desktopify

If stability is measured in uptime, I would suggest Raspberry Pi OS Lite. I have Raspberry Pi OS LIte, Raspberry Pi OS Lite + Mate desktop, Raspberry Pi OS Desktop, TwisterOS, and Ubuntu Mate.

Other than Ubuntu Mate (some issues) and TwisterOS (too new to make any claims) they are all very well behaved. Chromium has crashed on Lite + Mate a couple of times, but that is the system that gets the most interactive use. I have never actually had an full on OS crash on Raspbian other than when I was mucking about and did something dumb, and even then it was mostly fail to boot issues. Ubuntu on ARM is not anywhere near as stable as Ubuntu on x86, where I often had uptimes of over 365 days.

There are instances of Rasbian running continuously for 6 years or more.
Certainly 24/7 is no problem, I think most people leave Pi's running all the time because they use so little electricity that its not worth turning them on and off.

Ditto.
Raspberry Pi OS is extremely stable.
Only over-clock experiments or under-voltage experiments have crashed my Pi's - which is expected.
Currently running the new 64-bit version which is also rock solid, despite being in beta.
Pi4 8GB running PIOS64

I have 2 Pis that run as desktops and a couple more that do testing and streaming stuff. All are turned on/left on. The headless ones get sshed into every so often to update, since I like doing that interactively. They all run power outage to power outage (which are very infrequent where I live). The main desktop pi tends to only have uptimes of weeks since I tend to muck about with that one.

I have had linux boxes with uptimes measured in years. It really is a very different world than what folks living with Microsoft experience.
