VNC on Buster 64-bit

Fri Jun 05, 2020 7:12 pm

I installed the latest beta of Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit (2020-05-27-raspios-buster-arm64.img) on my new RPi4/8GB and have been unable to get VNC working.

I followed the instructions on: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... ccess/vnc/

When I use the VNC Connect client from my Mac I get: The connection was refused by the computer

When I came to the instructions to modify /root/.vnc/config.d/vncserver-x11 I found that the file does not exist.

Can anyone suggest how to proceed forward?

[EDIT]
NOTE: DO NOT use NoMachine. I am no expert on Linux and it has some very weird behaviour which has cause me no end of problems. Use X11VNC instead.

Given that VNC server doesn't work for connecting in to a headless Pi, I found that NoMachine for ARM - arm64
https://www.nomachine.com/download/down ... =109&s=ARM works just fine.
Its alpha software works nicely with raspios beta software.
And this is how I got the download onto the Pi from my WIn10 PC through SSH.
[FURTHER EDIT]
Persevered and got it running. Difficult! Used scp to get downloaded file (NoMachine) from Win10 over to Pi. Then followed instructions on link above. I have to say NoMachine seems to be very bloated and there are 10's of processes for it running on my Pi. And the PC installation took a while too for something so simple. Roll on RealVNC being available...
Then there are some issues with requiring passwords to shut down and mount USB drives.
Hope this all helps...

Seen lots of posts about issues with vncserver. I installed tightvnc on mine and it worked exactly the same as on my 32 bit versions - no issues at all. Tightvnc is part of my "standard" stack so didn't even try the shipped version.

X11vnc seems to be the solution, https://github.com/raspberrypi/Raspberr ... -636544190, I had issues with tigntvnc and tigervnc as they didn't seem to start the desktop properly.
