Rpi 4 Wifi issue

Sat Apr 11, 2020 8:46 pm

Just received a brand new Rpi 4B, installed the latest Rasbian Desktop. Did all the usual updates/upgrades

Rpi would not connect to my wireless network. My router is a Billion BiPac 5200G R4 and the wifi is operating on 2.4Ghz.

After much head scratching, realised that the Rpi may need a 5Ghz wireless connection, so I borrowed a BT Hub 4 which has this capability.

The Rpi connects with the wireless of the BTHub 4 and is assigned an ip address and works ok.

Surely it must be possible for the Rpi 4B to work with 2.4Ghz wireless routers such as my Billion router. I have previous versions of the Rpi and they all work with my Billion router.

Could someone explain what might be going on and have i missed something about configuring the Rpi 4B to use 2.4Ghz.

It should work just fine on either 2.4 or 5 GHz bands. Your most likely problem is a typo in the SSID or password so try going to the wireless icon and selecting the desired SSID and reentering the password. If you don't see the network at all, I would suspect a defective Raspberry Pi.

Did you set the country code? I don't think WiFi can will work at all without that, for fear of local broadcasting rules.

Yes, the country code could be the problem as well. Did you set it in localization options through raspi-config?

I generally put a working copy of wpa_supplicant.conf in the boot partition of a new SD image to avoid worrying about the configuration setup, but I think this only works on first boot.

Have re-entered my password multiple times without success when trying to connect on 2.4Ghz wifi. Only suspicion is that the password contains 2 spaces. Would be very unlucky to have received a faulty Rpi 4B, but possible.

Have checked the wpa_supplicant.conf file and it shows the country code set to GB which is correct for the United Kingdom.

Maybe try resetting/rebooting your router and see if that works.
