Is the new Raspberry PI 4 capable to play 10BIT H264

Mon Jun 24, 2019 9:41 am

Hi!

Is the new model capable to play 720P, 1080P 10BIT H264 encoded contets? As I saw it's capable to do 4K, but I'm not sure about lower res 10BIT encoded contents. RPI 3 B were not capable to play it, that's why I'm asking.

Content example (FFPROBE output):

Code: Select all

No, the H264 decoder is the same.

The H265 HEVC decoder supports 10bit 4k.

I was playing a 10bit h.264 encoded file just 5 minutes ago on my Pi3A+ though...
Is it really unsupported? Seems to work fine in the VLC that comes preinstalled.

I've tried only played by Kodi if I remember well.

I've a post from 2017 asking about the issue (After that I've switched to HTPC):

But thanks for suggestion, maybe I'll give it a try with VLC , at that time just used a "headless" debian with launching Kodi.

That would be software decoding, and would struggle with higher resolutions. The H264 decoder HW does not support 10bit.
