How to copy files from SD Card to SD card for Raspberry pi 3b+

Tue Jun 18, 2019 1:10 am

How would I copy the contents of the Micro SD Card in the Raspberry Pi (Like OS, the files, etc.) to another Micro SD Card for the Raspberry Pi 3b+? I tried to turn the SD Card Files into an image and put it into the new SD Cardas countless many other tutorials told me to do that, but that apparently doesn't work for the 3b+ model.

Thanks!

The process** can work but only if the O.S. version on the current card is new enough (or sufficiently updated/upgraded).
What do these commands report?

Code: Select all

uname -a
cat /etc/os-release
Trev.
**ie. the "SD Card Copier" tool.
Still running Raspbian Jessie on some older Pi's (an A, B1, B2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W) but Stretch on my 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, A+ and a B2. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

You must be running Raspbian Stretch, updated and upgraded.

Otherwise "...all bets are off..." as another prominent forum member used to post.

The SD Card Copier is usually available on the Desktop version of Raspbian.

Not seen that on Ubuntu or others (please correct me on this)

Hi FTrevorGowen

When I run the 2 commands that you provided, I get:

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 4.14.98-v7+ #1200 SMP Tue Feb 12 20:27:48 GMT 2019 armv7l GNU/Linux

[email protected]:~ $ cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)"
NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="9"
VERSION="9 (stretch)"
ID=raspbian
ID_LIKE=debian
HOME_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/"
SUPPORT_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianForums"
BUG_REPORT_URL="http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianBugs"
What can I do from this?

Just confirmed that you have Raspbian Stretch installed, however its not updated and upgraded to the latest
this is the output on my RPi3B+ updated and upgraded last weekend

Code: Select all

Linux Raspi3BP1 4.19.42-v7+ #1219 SMP Tue May 14 21:20:58 BST 2019 armv7l GNU/Linux
yours is still 4.14.98-v7

it does not indicate that you have desktop version, is that the one that you installed?

To fully upgrade your Raspbian Stretch install for use on the newer 3B+ model, run the following command on an older model Pi.

Code: Select all

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y
After that it should work fine on the Raspberry Pi 3B+ system. You can use the SD Card Copier utility to duplicate the card.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Thanks, HawaiianPi.

So once the update is done, then I can just make everything on the MicroSD Card an image and copy it to the new MicroSD Card?
