cardless boot over wifi

Fri Jan 18, 2019 12:51 am

Topic self explanatory.
Was wondering if anybody else has thought, or achieved this with a 3b+.

Idea was doing something along the lines of a self setting cluster.
Afaik it requires a card to do set the right flag for ethernet booting, but was wondering if it was possible to do it over wi-fi.

Perfect end scenario is a quick card in, first boot, run some auto scripts, turn off and remove card, and second boot it'll careless boot over wifi, and connect to a cluster setup without further SSH in to specific rpi's.

Other than a few "One Time" bits, there is no field modifiable storage on a Pi. Where do you plan to store the wireless configuration and credentials?

(In short...no, it won't work.)

Love it when some new poster comes along and says "Topic self explanatory" when its actually meaningless to most of the people on the forum :)

I just assumed it was an autocorrect of "cardless boot".. Is "careless booting" a real thing then :?:

You can, of course, do cardless (PXE) booting over ethernet on the 3B & 3B+. On the 3B you need to set the PXE one time programmable bit.

https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... utorial.md

You can't do PXE over WiFi.

ipxe is written for X86 pc's which have a network card with its own ROM or a motherboard bios , software wont run on pi being having an ARM processor and no on board ROM

With a little bit of thinking you should very quickly find the flaw in your reasoning, if you fail to find the flaw then it may help to write the contents of the wpa_supplicant.conf file on a piece of paper. Once you understand it may also be worthwhile to do some research on WPXE.

I haven't tried it but you might get what could be considered cardless Wi-Fi booting if you use a Wi-Fi repeater which has an ethernet connection to it and that establishes a connection to a router or AP all by itself whenever powered up.

It would come down to whether all the kit used could pass the protocol, respond and allow responses as expected in a timely fashion.
