Can no longer connect to Pi with Hostname

Fri May 26, 2017 2:03 pm

Hi Guys,

For some reason I can no longer connect to my Pi over the LAN based on the WINS Hostname.

Its set to FPHS, its on the same LAN / Subnet but the name cannot be found on the network. even rebooting both pi and laptop it fails to find the name still, though I can access the Pi via its IP in the same way.

Best thing is to install Bonjour on your Win machine

WINS name lookup is not the most reliable

Mind you, switching router on and off might be temp fix

If the hostname is FHPS, then you should use FHPS.local. Is that what you are using?

I tested it with my hostname using Ubuntu. Worked ok.

ALL supported & supportable versions of Windows have mDNS (multicast DNS aka zeroconf networking aka Bonjour) support built in. It would only be folks running XP or Win7 that need anything special like iTunes to get mDNS.

I've never installed iTunes (never needed it, I've never had any Apple device) and mDNS works for me.

I didn't realise that MS had done this with Win10

I'm still running Win98SE myself :)

Thanks all, oddly it used to work fine just running FPHS, not sure why it isnt anymore though. Never needed to run ".local" on the end of it.
