Information about kernel versions in Raspbian stable

Fri Apr 14, 2017 9:52 pm

Where can I find information about which kernel versions have been and will be when in Raspbian stable?

I know that the development takes place at https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux but I could not find this information with respect to the stable repository.

The tags correspond to the containing raspberrypi-kernel raspbian package.

The stable kernel is installed with apt-get. Current stable kernel is 4.4.50.

The information there is quite confusing. For example, I it says

on 20 Feb raspberrypi-kernel_1.20170405-1
on 20 Feb raspberrypi-kernel_1.20170303-1
:

Clicking on raspberrypi-kernel_1.20170405-1 shows
popcornmix tagged this on 20 Feb · 75404 commits to rpi-4.9.y since this tag
Merge remote-tracking branch 'stable/linux-4.4.y' into rpi-4.4.y

So there is the date of Feb. 20th but the package suggests the date Apr. 5th.
And rpi-4.9.y suggests it is a 4.9.x kernel while the next line mentions linux-4.4.x.

Can you explain a bit more how to read this?

That's a bit open ended. Is there some specific bit of information you're after? What was the reason for the original question?

I would like to know the release history and schedule about which kernels made it and are going to make it when into stable.

One needs this information for many reasons but my particular one is that I bought a Geniatech T230C USB TV stick and I heard it should be supported by kernel 4.11. How long do I have to wait?

There's no easy answer. We will be on 4.11 when it's ready, tested and deemed stable. Not this month, likely not within the next few months.

You can see the log of releases into the apt repo here:
https://github.com/RPi-Distro/firmware/ ... /changelog

The kernel is taken from https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware
The version numbers in the changelog correspond to the date that the firmware+kernel was released into the git repo above.

Code: Select all

raspberrypi-firmware (1.20170405-1) jessie; urgency=medium
The date at the bottom of the entry is the date the package was built, which may be a day before it goes into apt.

This makes things a bit clearer.
But I am still confused about the kernel versions since https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware say
`popcornmix kernel: Bump to 4.9.22`
But uname for the stable kernel reports 4.4.50.

So which numbers are correct and what do they mean?

Code: Select all

75404 commits to rpi-4.9.y since this tag
It means that since that tag, the rpi-4.9.y branch has had 75404 commits. It's just how github chooses to display information. I'ts not relevant.

Code: Select all

`popcornmix kernel: Bump to 4.9.22`
That's the latest commit to rpi-4.9.y and has nothing to do with the tags.

If you use rpi-update you will get the 4.9 kernel, but also need to be prepared for potential issues as it is effectively a development branch.
The apt-get kernel package hasn't been bumped to 4.9 as there are still a few niggles to resolve first.

In addition to what Shift PlusOne has written, generally we only release kernel which have long term support, hence 4.4 and 4.9. I don't believe 4.11 will be an lts release, so whilst there is a branch for it in the raspberrypi kernel repo it may not be released.

Is there anywhere a list of release dates of the Kernel both current and previous ??

Thank you.

But to help me understand, what is the difference between
on 20 Feb raspberrypi-kernel_1.20170405-1 and
on 20 Feb raspberrypi-kernel_1.20170303-1?

And what will be the next kernel minor version in RPi?
Will it be 4.9? How can one tell?

Nothing. raspberrypi-kernel binary package comes from the raspberrypi-firmware source package. The version gets bumped any time the source package is updated. In this case, a raspberrypi-bootloader update was needed, but the kernel stayed the same.

Most likely, unless there is something keeping us on 4.4 (I don't think there is anymore).

Is there any chance of feature backports? 4.10 got F2FS multiple device support which I'd like to use however it looks like we're a ways off before next LTS release.
