Not without some code on an SD card.

No. USB booting without any SD card is only available on BCM2837-based Pis i.e. Pi3 , CM3 and the Pi2 V2.

• Don't like the board ? Missing features ? Change to the prosilver theme ! You can find it in your settings.
• Don't like to search the forum BEFORE posting 'cos it's useless ? Try googling : yoursearchtermshere site:raspberrypi.org

You can boot from USB with a very minimal SD card presence. All you need is the /boot contents (and maybe not all of that), with a root=/dev/whereverUSBlivespartition in cmdline.txt. I have done this on a RPi 3 where the USB stick was a brand not properly supported for USB boot, and and a RPi 2, but have not tried on an original model B. I would expect it to work though.

According to Adafruit you can but need a SD card with the boot partition, everything else runs from the USB device. See

I have done 2(so far) Pi3's and a Pi2 with no problem.

I assume you're talking about sticking a bootcode.bin into the SD card and putting a boot partition onto the USB drive. I tried that before and it didn't work on the Model B. However, I made an issue on git and I think Gordon fixed it. There was a commit that said it was fixed however I can't recall what the commit ID is.

I haven't had the chance to retry USB booting on the Model B however it would definitely be worth taking a shot at this point, particularly as Gordon took a look at it not too long ago.

Unfortunately not, but you can boot from a SD Card with just "bootcode.bin" and boot up an Operating System from a USB MSD:
