Problem With Powered USB Hub

Sat Aug 18, 2012 3:48 pm

Hello!

I've searched around the forum pretty extensively and done more than a few google searches, but can't seem to find the answer i'm looking for, so any help would be brilliant!

Basically, I'm powering (or trying to power) my Pi off my USB hub (A logitech premium 4 port usb hub) which itself has a 5v 2.5A mains adaptor. Then use the hub as a hub through one of the Pi's USB ports. I probably failed at explaining what I mean.. it's explained a lot more coherently here

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... =29&t=9070

When only the hub is connected to the mains, and the USB to Micro USB to power the pi are connected all is good, the pi boots as usual and it's lovely...

The problems happen once the data cable from the hub is also connected to the Pi (So it can actually be used as a hub whilst powering it) the pi does nothing, well the red power light comes on but very dimly. Also, none of the lights on the hub come on either.

After reading about on the forum a bit, I thought maybe the hub was only putting out 500mA per port, so have since bought a "y/splitter cable" to draw power from two ports, but this had made no difference.

As the hub doesn't light up at all, this made me think that perhaps the hub has to be connected to an already powered usb source before it'll output power itself.. Is there anyway around that?

I'm sure to you guys it's a really simple fix.. so any ideas regarding the whole thing would be really helpful as I'm at a bit of a loose end now.

Thanks.

Leigh.

1) update https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-update

2) Try preventing power on the data line.
Cover the left contact of the data line with paper (held in place with tape).
if that fails try covering just the right one.

If that fails it might be an incompatible device:
