Re: Linux kernel is now 4.0

I just took the plunge upgrading from 3.18.16 to 4.0.5. So far no observed problems. I am running an HP HD-2200 webcam and an RTL2832U SDR dongle for monitoring aircraft ADS-B traffic. All came up without any issues. I do have two different WiFi dongles I need to test out at some point but so far my custom command line in cmdline.txt (turbo mode set to N and macaddr set to a previous Raspberry I had the got burned out by a nearby lightning strike) and devices are working.

It's nice to get positive feedback, but in general if people aren't complaining then we assume it is good. 8-)

You should assume that the complete silence is a good thing. That means the crazies who run rpi-update (and answer Y to the "are you sure that loaded weapon is pointing at YOUR foot?" question) have done it and haven't suffered badly.

I've got six of my eight Raspberries running 4.0.5 and the only one that was hard to upgrade was the one with the 8188eu WiFi dongle where I had to wait a couple of days for Mr Engman to build a new driver.

There you go, "It's a good thing.".

What benefit 4.0 has over 3?
By thinking like an engineer you can create a raspberry pi.
Michael Jackson enthusiast.
I got the PI model B, B+ and PI 2 model B.
When will I get the A? I don't know.

rpi-update should be removed from the distro. *If* you really need to run it, then the extra effort of installing it should not be a problem, if you don't then it may deter a few.

This is insane! I spent one week compiling drivers from github and couldn't make it work. Then you just threw me 1 click installer. Thank you so much!

Why don't you provide us with whole dropbox folder, or put compiled packages on github so we can find it more easily?

Re: Linux kernel is now 4.0

I am able to boot off the SD card but root to a USB hard disk with 4K sectors running btrfs. However, when I switched to the 4.0 kernel, the cmdline.txt trick setting root=PARTUUID=XXXX didn't seem to work. I have to set root=/dev/sda1. It did work with the 3.18 kernel. I tried this with both btrfs and ext4 as the root file system type with the same results.

I have not added a longer delay yet to see if that helps but that was not necessary on the 3.18 kernel.

Anything change here?

Thanks!

Bruce

Ah, I used PARTUUID= whereas you used UUID= Just to be clear, I have a GPT partition table with multiple partitions. I thought I had to use the PARTUUID rather than the UUID for the device itself? Not sure I completely understand this yet...

Does the drive have to be GPT?

DougieLawson are you running any raspbain-unattended installation atm ?

kinda curious as to why it doesnt preform the update correctly

thinking that if i repoint the ***** in the config.txt so it doesnt point at that trunck kernel and then cleanout then old firmware it should be able to update.

dpkg -l | grep trunk
ii linux-image-3.18.0-trunk-rpi 3.18.5-1~exp1+rpi16 armhf Linux 3.18 for RaspberryPI

cat /boot/config.txt
[pi1]
kernel=vmlinuz-3.18.0-trunk-rpi
initramfs initrd.img-3.18.0-trunk-rpi followkernel
gpu_mem=16
arm_freq=900
core_freq=250
sdram_freq=450
over_voltage=2

Good day folks,

I have 4 Raspis, the "master" is a model 2 and the others B+.

I've had no problem migrating to 4.0 kernel using rpi-update, but every time I type rpi-update again, all raspis upgrade the firmware (46 Mb), apparently to the same version :

Pi 2 : Linux raspi-2-1 4.0.5-v7+ #797 SMP PREEMPT Sat Jun 20 02:03:05 BST 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux

Pi B+ : Linux raspi-bp-4 4.0.5+ #797 PREEMPT Sat Jun 20 00:47:38 BST 2015 armv6l GNU/Linux

I just don't understand why, it never happened whilst running 3.0 version of kernel.

Any hint ?

I have a B and a 2B running plain Raspbian Jessie with a 4.0.6 kernel
One B running NOOBS with 3.18.7
One A+ running Raspbian Wheezy with 4.0.6
Two Bs running plain Raspbian Wheezy with 4.0.6
One B+ running plain Raspbian Wheezy with 4.0.6 and the root on a USB hard drive
and one B running Wheezy with a Wolfson 3.18.9 kernel

None have been built from ua-netinst at the moment. All run headless.

hi all,

could someone please confirm if an existing RPi with 3.18 kernel booting off USB drive with root=PARTUUID=xxxx will still boot after upgrading to 4.0 kernel? Or do I have to replace root=PARTUUID=xxxx with root=UUID=xxxx ?

Many thanks.

Good day folks,

any idea why my raspberries 2 and B+ keep applying the same update every day ?

Everytime I rpi-update, it updates to 4.05, reboots fine, I then type rpi-update again, it says up to date.

I rpi-update the day after, and it does the same, update, reboot and up to date.

It's been doing that from the day the 4.0 kernel was released.

Have you tried comparing the output of "uname -a" before and after the reboot? Are you perhaps just seeing that we have been making a lot of releases?

Was your /boot/.firmware_revision updated after each update?

Well, the firmware has been updated about 6 times in the last week or so. So you will get a few updates recently.

Hello,

of course, always the same, on the Pi 2 and on the 3 B+ :-)

In which case it may be why.

I'll keep rpi-update until it stops then :-)

Thank you sir.

FYI if you look here you can see when the updates used by rpi-update have been made.
