Multiple cameras?

I'm interested in connecting two or more cameras and wondering if this is possible.

I'm guessing no, I can't connect two camera modules simultaneously in the CSI slot.

But is there some way maybe to connect two cameras and switch between them serially, so I can take a shot from one then a shot from another in alternating fashion?

If not, what are my options? Cheap light USB cameras?

Yes, and the simplest way would be to have two different RPis. Connect them thru GPIO to communicate when one is done.

Connecting them by WiFi to a shared access point or ethernet cable to a shared switch is 10^6 times easier.

The compute module supports two cameras with 720p@30fps
max.

But using the compute module without the expensive devkit
or an already finshed board is nearly impossible.

you can use a model A+ adn use serial coms between the 2
or use a CM

Not reasonable, not cheap, but not as bad as it was. Half that price would still be expensive!

Its quite easy to do 2 USB cameras on 1 pi.

Its 1 pi (a b+) running 2 Microsoft VX-800 cameras it takes a still from each once a minute, but they are individually addressable so it could done a lot more frequently.

The VX-800 although long since defunct is readliy available refurbished on ebay.

Hello all!

I'm planning a surveillance system for my home.

I would like to connect at least 4 cameras over cat 6 cables to rpi 2. But how many cameras can rpi2 handle? (I read some discussions about it but I don't get the point... Be patient, please!)
I don't want to record 24/7 but I just want to take clear, high quality pictures (as much as rpi2 can) when motion is detected.
So, only one rpi 2 is fine for my job, is it? Or how many do I need?

Looking at this thread you can have one camera module per Pi but several USB cameras. An alternative is separate Pi each with a camera module sending photos to the server Pi to be processed.

What would be the best way to go about combining 2 RPi? I will also be 3D Printing an enclosure for this once i have the necessary components.

P.S.-I am a n00b when it comes to using the RPi. Currently in school for Computer engineering so this project completion would help me greatly on so many levels. Any advice on use of the RPi would also be very helpful.
