My RPi is running debian squeeze - which seems to run well. I have compiled an application which requires a display - and to be honest, I don't want to have to modify it to run with no display - and I want to run it without a display but where the display can be connected remotely from time to time.
The program displays graphically datalogger results - which are uploaded to an external web site every short while in any case - the normal use is to be for the datalogger to run without the display but obviously it will be useful to connect the display from time to time.
Here is how far I have got:
a) The program runs on the RPi when an HDMI display is connected - this is good;
b) Using tightvnc and ssh I can connect to the RPi from my remote terminal - but the desktop background is different to that seen on the HDMI monitor above;
c) The RPi boots without a display connected and then I can connect using tightvnc;
d) When I run the program from the VNC session it fails and complains of an incorrectly set DISPLAY parameter.
I am not an X-Windows expert, nor a GTK expert, nor an expert at all.
Can someone help me with i/ how to set this DISPLAY parameter; and ii/ how to set it so that my program will not care whether it is run from a VNC session or from a normal console (as I can see these being likely uses on the same machine)?
Grateful for the assistance.
PS - anyone know whether Model As will be available anytime soon - as this is the ideal target using a USB WiFi rather than Ethernet to run from, e.g. the allotment shed...
