Run ARM VM's directly on raspbian

Thu Jul 29, 2021 9:58 pm

Hello everyone..

I have an rpi4 and I would love to run Aan RM-VM directly on raspbian (don't want to install esxi).
is this possible anyhow? chrooting isn't an option as I would like to run windows10 (arm version)

Code: Select all

root@pi400:~# ls -l /dev/kvm
crw-rw----+ 1 root kvm 10, 232 Jul 28 05:59 /dev/kvm
kvm appears to be available, so just use qemu with kvm as normal

QEMU runs on Pi4's, default is 3.1
I compiled 6.0.9 and it runs small Arm VMs on Raspberry Pi OS on Pi 400 too.

No idea what Aan-RM is, how big is it?

I think it is a typo for "an ARM-VM".

Hmm , probably why a googoo search could not find it

I use QEMU for Ultibo VMs running on Windows 10, Linux Intel x86-64 and Pi 32 bit OS.
Not perfect but it works for some things.
Framebuffer graphics works.

Used it to run a PiCore boot partition, but still need to figure out intramfs.
The start.elf can load kernel and an initramfs.
The aarch64 version can load zipped files

If only I could figure out how to get VM access to GPIO pins and accelerated graphics.
One day maybe

Plug a Zero into a QEMU box and get real GPIO via USB gadget mode?

Seven VM's running on a Pi400 in QEMU 6.0.0.
Number 7 took some time to load, Chromium was open too.
CPU limited, not memory limited.

Wonder if 32bit VM's will run on 64bit Raspberry OS?
