Is the Model A+ capable enough for my project?

I've got a project in place currently using a Model A+ that controls my central heating system.

It currently has a small LCD connected over SPI using the notro FBTFT modules.

On boot it loads Midori and a webpage which is essentially an info page for the central heating.

I'm using a USB ethernet adapter.

It seems to be getting low on free memory, Midori looks to hog quite a lot of resources which I think is causing some instability.

Should the A+ be up to the job of running Midori 24/7 in Kiosk/Fullscreen mode? Realisitcally the actual central heating scripts don't cause any issues because they are very simple and have very little impact on resources.

I originally used Chromium but that really does use resources like it's going out of fashion.

Is it best I just use a 512MB model (or RPi2?)

depends on your memeory usage
why not dispense with the GUI webbrower and use elinks or do a curses display

You may be able to get some RAM back by lowering

Code: Select all

gpu_mem=128
to the bare minimal value needed to get Xwindows to start. You're not using the GPU with a TFT.

Also look at switching to G√ľnter Kreidl's kweb3 kiosk browser rather than your Midori memory hog.

Thanks for the replies.

I want to keep a "full-featured" browser so I'll give kweb3 kiosk browser a go.

It's not displaying much though!
