Thanks, elmicha, for the analysis. Look at issue 827, it might be solved. I am currently cloning my SD card and will report back.

I can confirm that on the latest kernel from rpi-update (3.18.7-v7+) has fixed the issue, lirc-rpi is working fine once again (with dt_overlay on)

Yes, thank you, I can also confirm it works fine now after a "sudo rpi-update"!

To come back to the topic: sending works but I have this weird behavior that when I send a sequence with irsend an LED which is connected to totally different GPIO pin flickers for the duration of the sequence. I tried it with different pins and it still happens. How can this happen?

For those still following: I found the cause of the LED flickering. It is an (unwanted) feedback loop. I started a new topic here.

I have exactly the same problem with IR-blasting using lirc.

I'm running a raspberry pi 2 with OpenELEC distribution 5.0.5 with kernel 3.18.8, i.e. a kernel that should work I guess.
Lirc is version 0.9.1

Was there anything else than the kernel that was updated related to lirc when you upgrade your system?

I'm encountering the same issue.

I've got two Pi's setup around the house to control my TVs from my iPhone, Pi B and Pi B+. (Loosely based on slimjim777's awesome web-irsend project: https://github.com/slimjim777/web-irsend)

Setup a third one based upon a Pi 2 and IR transmission doesn't work correctly.

From scratch install with NOOBS v1.4 and all updates (as of 2015/03/15).

Looking at the IR output on my scope and the transmission looks like what Elmicha posted. Pulses are spaced way too far apart.

The total transmission time for a code is around 500ms instead of around 50ms.

B+ that works: 3.18.7+ #755 PREEMPT Thu Feb 12 17:14:31 GMT 2015 armv6l GNU/Linux
Pi 2 that fails: 3.18.7-v7+ #755 SMP PREEMPT Thu Feb 12 17:20:48 GMT 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux

That's too old. If you look at the "it works" messages above, it worked with the development kernel on Feb 18. You can install rpi-update and run it to get a development kernel.

I have the same issue but with the current kernel:

:~/# uname -a
Linux heimdall 3.18.9-v7+ #772 SMP PREEMPT Sun Mar 22 15:19:51 GMT 2015 armv7l GNU/Linux

With gpio -g write 17 1, the LED or IR-LED are shining bright, but if I use: irsend SEND_ONCE Denon_RC-917 ON.
The IR is not visible at all and the LED is only very dim.

Any ideas?
