kernel panic on 2015-01-31 raspian model B

Fri Feb 06, 2015 12:33 am

hi! I just pulled my raspberry pi model B (the older model before the mounting holes) out from a several month slumber in a box and I downloaded the 2015-01-31 raspian and installed it to an sd card with win32 diskimager and when I booted the pi it ran through the normal scrolling screen of startup stuff and then it scrolled a wall of hex code and said Kernel Panic. I tried with 2 raspberry pi's (same model I think) and I tried reburning the SD card and I got the same result.

I used an earlier image (2013-05-25-wheezy-raspbian.img) on the same sd card and it booted fine on both pies.

I installed my brand new model B 2 yesterday and I am now experiencing quite some kernel panics with the 2015-01-31 wheezy. This is my 5th RPi, yet the first one that ever panic'ed.
Could be the new Pi or the new wheezy… I wonder...
One SDRAM gives more problems than another but both of them fail when I try to use a webbrowser (tried iceweasel and Epiphany). Both SDRAMs have been running just fine on other model B's.

Will go get another SD-card in the afternoon, just to make sure...

The other 4 Pi's (256MB B, 512MB B and 512 MB B+) all run wheezy 2014-12-24 since Christmas yet meanwhile 'apt-get upgrade' supplied them with a new kernel too. They all run flawlessly.

Can you post a photo of the stacktrace? Ensure that it's in focus so you can read the text.

Is the crash repeatable, i.e. does it have the same trace each time?

New SD-card, 16GB class 10,… Again the system panics…

Will go check to see what happens when using the previous wheezy-release...

Tried wheezy 2014-12-24 on the model B 2, but it doesn't get any further than the colored startup-screen. Sometimes it doesn't even get that far…

I've tried to take a photo of the screen, but when it got in focus the Pi rebooted.
Will try again in a sec.

Where do I send the picture to?

I'm sorry (no, happy) to report that I did not manage to get it panic'ing again…

Here is what I did, that may have, hopefully, fixed it:
I pushed in and out the little memory-card maybe about 20 times or so because I just wanted to make sure the connections between the Pi and the card would be OK.

Will keep on using the B2 heavily tomorrow and will get back whenever there is something to report.

Note: re-seating at first looked like a solution, but later on it appeared not to have helped!

I tried my new RPI 2 using the latest version NOOBS 1.3.12 of 2015-02-02. Kernel panic!
Ended up with a stack dump and dropped dead.

I then tried the lite version, just downloaded from RPI.
It first fixed ext4 partition etc. Then I got THIS:

Error downloading or extracting
tarball wget: unable to resolve
host address 'director.downloads.raspberrypi.org'
tar: short read

then R.I.P.

Did you, like I did, re-seat the micro-SD card (maybe 20 times or so)?

While it used to crash within minutes before doing this it didn't crash anymore afterwards. It even survived the night showing a webpage with quite a few movies playing on it.

I did not reseat the SD card.
Instead I downloaded the raspian .img file, reformatted my micro SD card and moved the image onto the card.

It booted flawlessly, and I could download synaptic and the a couple of programs.
Now I only have to find a way to change the keyboard to Swedish layout.

sudo /usr/bin/raspi-config

and there: 4 Internationalisation Options
and there: I3 Change Keyboard Layout

In fact you DID reseat... PULLED OUT the card, formatted it, wrote raspbian onto it and PUSHED it back IN.

sudo raspi-config
The internationalisation option lets you set timezone, locale and keyboard layout.

It just crashed again twice... No stacktrace as it happened right after 'startx'... All I had was a frozen GUI... 8-(

During the boot-processes following the crashes I noticed a lot of memory-card I/O-errors...
As I said before: This happens on 3 different micro-SD-cards. Sure hoping it's not a Pi-hardware problem.

Added:
With help of a RaspberryPi engineer we discovered this was probably a hardware problem.

Just got my RPI2 in the mail today. I'm having the same crashing issue.

Installed using Noobs first. Had usb keyboard, mouse, and usb wifi adapter.

It started out by crashing every time I would run startx. I removed the wifi adapter and it seemed to help. However, adding the Raspberry Pi camera caused it to start again. After several reboots, it would randomly panic shortly after boot. I've also reinserted my card over 20 times as someone else mentioned.

Reloading the card with the actual Raspbian image 2015-01-31-Raspbian. Taking forever. Ugh. Will mess with it in the morning.
